Peter Pan is a 2003 movie based on the old story and various film incarnations of Peter Pan. It stars Jason Isaacs, Jeremy Sumpter, Rachel Hurd-Wood and, in a smaller but still relatively important role, Harry Eden.

For those of you who don’t know the Peter Pan tale it goes as such. Three children are asleep one night when they wake up and discover a boy in their room. He’s there trying to chase down his shadow, which has gotten away from him. After managing to secure said shadow he then invites the three children along with him to Neverland, a place of wild adventure and perpetual youth. They go with him, flying out the window of their house and beyond the clouds.

Neverland is everything the boy said it would be, and they have lots of good fun with Peter and his band of Lost Boys - which is exactly what it sounds like, a bunch of boys who have become lost in Neverland and don’t care that much about going home - until they discover that Neverland has a villain: the evil Captain Hook. Despite a series of kidnappings by Hook and his pirates the Lost Boys and Peter eventually come out on top, however, and Hook is relegated to a watery grave after he’s swallowed by a crocodile.

So where does Eden fit in? Simple: he’s one of the Lost Boys. Nibs, to be precise, one of the few Lost Boys who actually stands out among the masses.

There are bit parts, sure. And then there are extreme bit parts, truly bit parts, where the actor is barely even seen. Harry Eden, though he’s doing well so far, was the subject of one of these bit parts in 2007 in the aborted television show Cape Wrath.

Cape Wrath is the story of a family under the witness protection program moving to a new community called the Meadowlands. At first it seems the perfect place for the fugitive Brogan family, as it’s crime-free and appropriately quiet. But the small town isn’t what it seems, and soon it turns out that the town is a kind of psychological experiment, and the Brogans are a part of it.

And Eden? His part is that of a reflection, nothing more. He plays the younger version of Jack Donnelly, a man guilty of kidnapping and sexually abusing a woman when he was younger. He served time in prison for the crime (the woman died after several days of torture) and was sent to Meadowlands after ten years of incarceration. In one scene Jack is looking into a mirror and he sees himself as he was when he killed the woman.

And that reflection is, of course, Harry Eden. Eden doubtless would have had a greater chance to expand on the character in future episodes; however, Cape Wrath was canceled after one season. A pity.

What do you get when you mix James Bond with the Artful Dodger? Why, a chap named Joe Scott, of course. And a movie called Flashbacks of a Fool.

The title of the movie is very telling of the action. Flashbacks of a Fool is the tale of Scott, a fading Hollywood star (played by Daniel Craig) who has recently learned of the death of one of his childhood friends. In learning this Scott starts having flashbacks to his youth, back to days he spent in a small seaside town in England. Days that he tried to escape with stardom and an excess of women and drugs.

The younger Scott (played by Harry Eden) is faced with female problems. Not only does he have a relationship with teenage Ruth (Felicity Jones), but one of his mother’s friends is trying her best to seduce him. Trying to get away from this life Scott runs away from his home.

But he can’t stay away forever. He returns to see his dead friend off, and is forced to reunite with his old flame Ruth. What follows is a bittersweet confrontation that will doubtless move any viewer.

The part of the Artful Dodger is a staple for any production of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. The story would not be able to proceed without his skills as a pickpocket and small gang of child thieves.

Roman Polanski’s 2005 recreation of the film is no exception, and casts up-and-coming British star Harry Eden as the Artful Dodger. Inspired by the Artful Dodger in Lionel Bart’s 1960 play Oliver!, Eden was lauded for his believable performance and strong support for Barney Clark as Oliver. As the film is a somewhat darker version of Oliver Twist than most past productions, the Artful Dodger is appropriately toned down from formerly enthusiastic performances, and in Eden’s hands seems all the more realistic.

Though Eden portrayed the Artful Dodger in his younger years, it is still considered one of his best performances to date.

A prime example of his dedication to hard roles is his part as Paul in the 2002 British movie Pure. Playing a 10-year-old boy, Eden is forced to care for his mother, a drug addict who recently lost a drug-dealing friend. As he cares for his mother and younger brother, Paul is forced to confront the fear that, having lost his father several years prior, he may also lose his mother, either to addiction or abandonment. As all this is happening Paul befriends a pregnant drug addict (played by Keira Knightley) who helps him through the experience.

Lauded for his performance in Pure, Harry Eden won a Manfred Salzgeber Award at the Berlin International Film Festival and a British Independent Film Award in 2003.
